Archive: "Paint It, Black"

이번 전시의 주제는 ‘Black’이다. 전시 제목은 1966년 롤링 스톤스의 대표곡 Paint It Black에서 차용했다. 이 노래는 인도 악기 시타르를 전면에 내세우며 서구적 가치와 방법에 대한 회의적 태도를 담아, ‘현대적 태도’를 상징한다.

갤러리 비선재는 1940~60년대에 태어난 한국 작가들을 주목하며, 단색화가 시대적 요청이었던 시절의 고난과 환희를 다시 성찰하고자 한다. 한국 추상회화는 서구에서 이식되었으나, 이 땅의 풍토 속에서 다른 방식으로 성장해 독자적인 의미를 갖게 되었다. 국제적으로 인정받은 단색화는 동아시아적 수행과 전통 미학의 기운생동을 현대미술로 승화시키며, 한국 미술만의 토대를 구축했다. 이번 전시는 그 성취를 다시 조명한다.

The theme of this exhibition is “Black.” Its title is borrowed from Paint It Black (1966), the landmark song by The Rolling Stones. By introducing the Indian sitar and carrying a skeptical stance toward Western values, the song came to symbolize a “modern attitude.”

Gallery Bisunjae reflects on Korean artists born between the 1940s and 1960s, revisiting the hardships and aspirations of a period when monochrome painting was both an artistic constraint and a profound search for meaning. While rooted in Western abstraction, Korean painting grew differently on its own soil, forming an independent identity. Recognized worldwide, Dansaekhwa distilled East Asian discipline and the traditional aesthetic of qi yun sheng dong into contemporary art. This exhibition reexamines that achievement and the foundation it built for Korean art.
