신기옥(1941-)은 한국 추상회화 1세대의 선구자로, ＜오리진＞ 그룹 창립 멤버입니다. 1960년대 서구 ‘후기 추상회화(Post-painterly Abstraction)’를 동시대적 시각으로 재구축한 ＜선율＞ 연작을 통해, 그는 수직과 수평이 교차하는 격자 구조 속에 철학적 사유와 내면의 선율을 담아냅니다.

작품 속 선과 격자는 삶과 세계의 교차를 상징하며, ‘영혼의 선율(spiritual resonance)’은 작가의 내면과 관람객의 감각이 만나는 경험을 구현합니다. 캔버스 위의 천맥(阡陌)은 예술적 시간과 일상의 시간이 함께 울려 퍼지는 인생을 표현합니다.

Shin Ki Ock (b. 1941), a pioneer of Korean abstract painting and founding member of the ＜Origin＞ group, presents the ＜Melody＞ series. Inspired by the 1960s Western Post-painterly Abstraction, these works reinterpret modern abstraction with a contemporary vision, embodying philosophical reflection and inner resonance through intersecting vertical and horizontal grids.

The lines and grids symbolize the intersection of life and world, while the “spiritual resonance” reflects the encounter between the artist’s inner world and the viewer. The concept of Cheon-Maek (阡陌) in the compositions conveys how artistic and everyday time coexist, creating a subtle, harmonious life rhythm.
