지난 8월에서 9월까지 한 달에 걸쳐서 경쟁에 의한 공모로 일본 신예 작가 10명을 선발했다. 일본의 국공립 미술관, 갤러리, 옥션 관계자가 심의하여 얻은 결과로 현재 일본에서 눈부시게 활약하는 신진 작가가 주축을 이룬다.

   일본 현대미술의 기저는 모노하와 구타이를 거쳐서 수퍼플랫이라는 일본 팝아트 운동을 거치는 사이 21세기 상반기에 다음과 같은 특성으로 분화하고 있다. 첫째, 센세이셔널리즘으로 정물이나 풍경과 같은 대상에 독특한 정서와 감정을 기입하는 스타일이다. 일본 사회의 고독이나 삶의 부유성 등 에피메럴리티(ephimerality), 즉 영구적으로 감내할 수 없는 삶과 생명의 덧없음을 나타내는 스타일이 많다. 둘째, 팝의 재해석이다. 팝은 무의식의 심연이나 이념을 표상하지 않는다. 누구나 쉬게 볼 수 있는 대중매체와 현실을 대상으로 한다. 일본 팝아트의 역사는 오래되어 70년대까지 소급된다. 대중매체가 있는 한 팝아트의 재해석은 지속할 것이기 때문에 50년이 지난 지금까지 지속하고 있다. 셋째, 스텍터클주의이다. 광대한 경관을 설치나 영상으로 나타내 보이면서 시공간의 문제를 해석한다. 넷째, 시적 감수성으로 사물에 다가가는 부류가 있다. 섬세한 감수성으로 사람 사이의 연약한 관계성(fragility)을 그리는가 하면, 인간관계에서 발생하는 낭만적 거짓(romantic lie)을 다루기도 한다.

   여기 참가한 10명의 작가는 대략 위와 같은 내용을 견지하고 있다. 주로 1980년 이후 태생의 작가이며, 이론이 고도성장을 구가하던 시기에 태어나서 그 궤도가 하향곡선을 그릴 때 유년기를 보낸 세대이다. 일본 현대미술에서의 거시 담론, 즉 거대 이슈는 서구의 수용과 일본성의 문제, 사회 정의 실현 등이었는데, 이로 나타난 사조가 모노하, 구타이, 수퍼플랫 등의 미술운동이었다. 이제 거대 이슈는 종식을 고했으며, 개인의 정서와 스타일의 개성화에 모든 에너지가 집중되고 있다.

From August to September, ten emerging Japanese artists were selected through a competitive open call, reviewed by curators, gallerists, and auction specialists. The result is a group of young talents who are now actively shaping the Japanese contemporary art scene.

Japanese contemporary art, having evolved through movements such as Mono-ha, Gutai, and Superflat, has entered the 21st century with new directions. Current tendencies include:

• Sensationalism — inscribing unique emotions into still lifes and landscapes, often reflecting ephemerality and the fragility of life.

• Pop reinterpretation — drawing from mass media and everyday reality, continuing the long tradition of Japanese Pop art.

• Spectacularism — using expansive installations and video works to explore space and time.

• Poetic sensibility — delicately addressing objects, fragile relationships, and even the “romantic lie” within human connections.

Most of the participating artists were born after 1980, a generation shaped as Japan’s high-growth era declined. While earlier movements engaged with broad cultural and social issues, today’s practices concentrate on personal emotion and the individuality of style.
